OREGON CITY,Ore. — It was anunusual call for Oregon

ghters:A1,500-pound camel,named Moses,needed to be rescued.The call came in Tuesday night inClackamas County after the Oregon Cityowners of the camel called

ghters tosay that Moses had fallen into a sinkhole6 to 8 feet deep and was possiblyinjured. The owners — who have sever-al camels and run a children’s ministry— had tried to get the camel out them-selves but failed.Fire

ghters had to carefully shovelmud for several hours to free the animal.The rescuers were concerned Moseswould break his legs if he’d try to freehimself while still partially buried.But Moses was patient,and eventu-ally firefighters got him out. Moseslay on his side for an hour restingafter the rescue.
Police:Man crashes,tries to tow cars while drunk
BLAINE,Wash. — A 54-year-oldWashington state man has been arrestedafter police say he crashed two carswhile intoxicated,then got in his towtruck and tried to move the vehicles.The Bellingham Herald reports thatTommy Ryser was arrested and bookedin jail on three counts of driving underthe influence Monday.The Whatcom County Sheriff’s officesays Ryser crashed his truck into a util-ity pole Monday night,abandoned thatvehicle and got in his wife’sVolkswagen but crashed that car into aguardrail. He then got his privatelyowned tow truck and attempted to towthe vehicles,even with a bloodied fore-head.Sgt. Larry Flynn says Ryser pulledup to the scene of one of the crasheswhile police were investigating.

JOPLIN,Mo. — A southwestMissouri teenager dressed as a machete-wielding madman to promote aHalloween store was the one who endedup getting a scare.The Joplin Globe reports a police of

-cer pointed a gun at the costumedteenager and ordered him to the groundSaturday after getting a report that a dis-turbed person was brandishing a weaponon a city street.The teen,whose name was notreleased,wore a mask and swung whatlater proved to be a plastic machetewhile waving to cars outside the Spirit of Halloween store.Other officers arrived and quicklydetermined the boy posed no threat.Rick Henderson,consignment ownerof the store,says the boy was not actingstrangely. He says a large banner adver-tised that it was a Halloween store.
